A train travelling from London to Honiton was involved in a crash today (Sunday 31 October) near Salisbury.

The incident reportedly took place at around 7pm near Salisbury Station when the rear carriage of the 1708 Great Western Railway service from Portsmouth Harbour to Bristol Temple Meads derailed after striking an object in a tunnel.

The derailment meant that there was a signalling failure, which led the 1720 South Western Railway service from London Waterloo to Honiton to collide with the train.

GWR has said that all lines between Westbury and Southampton Central are blocked, and disruption is expected until the end of the day on Tuesday 2 November.

A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue service said in a statement: "We are currently at the scene of a train crash near St Marks Avenue, Salisbury.

"Approx. 50 firefighters from both Dorset & Wilshire FRS and Hampshire FRS are working with partners from Wiltshire Police, South Western Ambulance Service and Network Rail at this major incident."
