A 14-year-old girl passed Exmouth today on a solo sail around the island of Great Britain.

Katie McCabe embarked on her journey from Topsham this morning, passing Exmouth at around 12pm in her 26-foot wooden Morgan Giles yacht named Falanda.

Her route will take her east along the English Channel, up past London and East Anglia to Scotland, and down through the Scottish islands and the Irish Sea to Land's End.

She aims to return to the Exe Estuary in August.

Her father David will follow behind her in his own boat for safety.

If she completes her journey, she will be the youngest person to sail solo around Great Britain.
