Get creative with wool for Easter yarn-bombing display

A 'joyous display' of colourful knitted and crocheted creations is to take shape at the Lawn this spring.

Val Hempstock of the Spin a Yarn group, part of Assist Teignbridge, is organising a 'yarn-bombing' initiative, with the wool decorations to be put in place in the first week of April.

Val and her group have begun knitting and crocheting for the project, and she's inviting everyone to get involved so that the display – which will have an Easter theme - can be as big and colourful as possible.

She said: "I've never done this before, but I've always wanted to."

She said the plan is for an initiative similar to the Poppy Wall for Remembrance last November, which saw knitted and crocheted poppies covering parts of the railings at the end of the bowling green.

Val hopes to yarn-bomb the railings, a large tree nearby and maybe some of the Lawn's benches, but it will depend on how many items are made.

No expertise needed!

She's emphasising that people don't need to be experts with wool to get involved.

"The Spin a Yarn group's got a Facebook page and I'm putting up some really simple crochet and knitting patterns.

"I've got patterns for chicks and Easter eggs, and I've also found a way to turn simple knitted squares into rabbits.

"People can just make 'granny squares', or bunting – anything really."

Donated wool and padding can be picked up from the Assist Teignbridge office at the Manor House, and finished items should be dropped off there between now and March 26.
