Dawlish's Shaftesbury Theatre will reopen on Saturday, July 24 after 16 months of closure caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The first event there, on that evening, will be a screening of Military Wives, the hit movie based on the true story of the much-loved choir. This will be performed to a socially distanced audience.

This will be followed by a programme of films, plays, one-nighter concerts and a traditional family pantomime.

And if you'd like to take part in the panto, to be performed in January, auditions are being held at the theatre on Sunday, July 25.

What's on at the Shaftesbury Theatre?

The next film will be a screening of the drama Nomadland, starring Frances McDormand, on Saturday, August 14.

Meanwhile, live theatre will return to Dawlish on Tuesday, August 3, with the farce Stage Struck, written by Yvonne and John Eddleston and directed by Paula Smith, playing until Saturday, August 7. The first two performances will be performed to a socially distanced audience.

This will be followed by the thriller The Edge of Darkness by Brian Clemens, directed by Will Clark, which runs from Tuesday, October 5 until Saturday, October 9.

There's also an exciting line-up of one-nighter events planned, including Queen tribute act The Good Old Fashioned Lover Boys on Saturday, September 11.

Saturday, November 13 sees a production of All Together Now!, a global event celebrating local theatre, in which theatres around the world will be performing an exclusive musical revue featuring songs by the composers of the greatest musicals.

On Tuesday, November 16, it's Happy Days Are Here Again, a touring show featuring songs by artistes including Dame Vera Lynn, Arthur Askey, Gracie Fields and Flanagan and Allen.

Dawlish's family pantomime

Pantomime returns to Dawlish in January 2022 with Jack and the Beanstalk, written and directed by Chris Matanlé. Auditions for this will take place on Sunday, July 25 at the theatre – visit the Shaftesbury Theatre website and Facebook page for more information on how you can take part.

During the closure forced by the pandemic, several improvements have been made at the Shaftesbury Theatre. Read more about that here.
