A woman has been rescued from her smoke-filled house in Dawlish after neighbours heard an alarm sounding and called the fire service.

Residents of King Street heard the sound of the smoke alarm at about 2.20am today (Tuesday, May 11) and rang the doorbell, but got no response.

Three fire crews from Dawlish and Teignmouth rushed to the scene and found a fire in the ground-floor kitchen of the two-storey property. They also found the female occupant who was suffering from the effects of breathing in smoke. She was treated by firefighters until an ambulance arrived.

The fire, which had started after food was left on the cooker hob, was extinguished quickly and there was no damage to the property – but it was smoke-logged and had to be thoroughly ventilated.
