Dawlish's colonnade underpass will remain open but may soon close for works on an uncharted gas main.

The walkway, which provides access under the railway line to Dawlish Town Beach, had been closed for three months of engineering works in mid-June before the gas main was discovered just days later.

The utility company responsible for the gas main has since visited the site.

A Network Rail spokesperson said: "The utility company has now been out to site to assess the uncharted gas main and we're waiting for their confirmation of next steps and the timing of any necessary works.

"This will influence when the access will next need to be closed but we will keep it open until further notice.

"Thanks for your patience and support."

The object of the original three-month closure was to install 20m foundations for a bridge connecting two sections of the new sea wall and for a channel for Dawlish Water to flow out to sea.
