Dawlish Town Council held a two-minute silence and playing of the Last Post and Reveille today to mark the NHS' 73rd anniversary since its foundation.
Today (5 July) has been dubbed 'NHS Social Care and Frontline Workers Day', in a move inspired by the health service's response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Mayor of Dawlish, Councillor Val Mawhood, said in a speech at the Manor House: "We recognise the dedication shown by all members of staff of the NHS, for caring for us from cradle to grave.
"Before this institution was set up 73 years ago, life was a lottery; you had to pay for healthcare, even for help to give birth, as some of us remember.
"How lucky we are to know that regardless of wealth, we can call upon this service throughout our lives.
"Our NHS has saved countless lives, and has given hope to many, and we know help is always there when we need it.
"Indeed, our NHS is the envy of many nations.
"We owe special thanks to the many thousands of NHS staff and support workers who have given us such selfless dedication during these many months of the Covid-19 pandemic, often at risk to themselves, and yet not hesitating.
"Our community joins the nation in expressing our grateful thanks for all that you do.
"Thank you simply does not say enough - once again, thank you, and happy birthday NHS!"
When was the NHS founded?
The NHS was launched on 5 July 1948 - 73 years ago today.
It was designed to give the public access to healthcare based on their needs rather than how much they were able to pay, and is funded by taxes.
