A pollution alert for Dawlish's Coryton Cove has been issued after sewage was discharged into the water.

It follows the heavy rainfall last night that prompted a weather warning from the Met Office.

According to environmental charity Surfers Against Sewage, storm sewage has been 'discharged from a sewer overflow ... within the past 48 hours'.

The beaches at Holcombe and Shaldon have also been affected.

Storm drain overflows allow water companies to redirect water from heavy rainfall into rivers and the sea to prevent flooding on land.

However, this means that raw, untreated sewage can end up in the water.
