Dawlish pubs help buy medical equipment for Ukraine war frontline
Two Dawlish pubs have helped raise money to buy a piece of medical equipment to be sent to the frontlines of the war in Ukraine.
The Gresham House Inn raised £500 and Shooters sports bar donated an additional £100 to purchase a handheld ultrasound machine, which will reportedly allow frontline medics to assess how bad injuries are and whether people need to go to hospital.
Scott Cheadle of local company Toadpit Medical Services, who has already made several trips to the war-torn country to deliver medical aid, had appealed for funds to buy one on social media.
Local woman Rosie Dawson of Facebook group Ukraine: Dawlish Cares saw the appeal and then approached the pubs for help.
She said: "We were following him and he was appealing for a handheld ultrasound machine for medics on the frontlines to use.
"This isn't just for soldiers who will be fighting, it will be for random people who get caught up in this as well.
"He was saying it was about £500-£600, these handheld ultrasound devices.
"I went to the two of the best pubs I know for fundraising. [The Gresham House Inn] put on a race night and that raised £500, and then Shooters sports bar, they donated £100."
Facebook group Ukraine: Dawlish Cares is also still collecting items to send out to Ukraine.
Rosie added: "We regularly update what it is we're looking for and who we're working with.
"If people pick stuff off the list and buy a few bits of extra shopping, they can drop it off at Westcliff School and Gatehouse School in Dawlish, Monday to Friday 9am to 3pm, and Shooters every day from 4.30pm.
"If there's a considerable donation we can always arrange for one of our admins to pick it up as well, and then take it directly to the garage that we've been using."
