Two local organisations were presented with 'Outstanding With Loneliness' (OWL) awards at a town council meeting last week for their efforts to reduce loneliness in the area.

The awards come as part of the town council's project of the same name, which provides certificates, badges, and plaques to individuals and groups supporting the lonely.

Representatives from The Strand Centre and the Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club accepted the awards on Wednesday (7 December).

Paul Lentle, the chef/manager of The Strand Centre, which offers "a warm welcome to residents of all ages" and is the home of many community and support groups including the Inspire Café, received two nominations.

One was from an elderly lady living on her own who goes to the centre for lunch. She said that she always receives a warm welcome from Paul and the staff, and that they are always prepared to listen and provide help.

On one occasion in particular when she was absent for a few days, Paul sent out a search party to her home to check on her wellbeing. Paul also arranged for hot meals to be delivered to her home during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Heather Graham, the founder of the Dawlish Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club, also received an award.

She started the club after noticing how lonely veterans appeared at a Royal British Legion event a couple of years ago.

The club, which launched in August, already has over 50 members.

It holds its breakfasts, costing £8 per person, on the second Saturday of each month at The Smugglers Inn.

Anyone with a connection to the military is welcome.
