Dawlish Minor Injuries Unit could reopen soon, NHS trust says

The minor injuries unit at Dawlish Community Hospital could reopen within 12 months, according to the NHS trust responsible for it.

It was closed more than two years ago in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and ongoing staffing problems have kept it shut since.

But now it looks as if that problem has been solved - and Totnes MIU, which was also closed at the same time as Dawlish's, is slowly reopening.

Chief Operating Officer for Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust John Harrison said: "The temporary closures [of the Totnes and Dawlish MIUs] were made due to staffing challenges which were exacerbated by the demands of the pandemic.

"We have worked hard to recruit and train staff during this time and we are now able to reopen Totnes MIU.

"We have recruited further staff and following an intensive training programme of up to 12 months they will have the skills required for an MIU.

"This does mean that we are unable to reopen the MIU at Dawlish Community Hospital at the moment but aim to have it up and running within 12 months when the team are fully skilled."
