The Mayor of Dawlish has recorded a video tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh, following his death on Friday, April 9.
Cllr Alison Foden said she was 'saddened' to hear the news, and recalled meeting Prince Philip when she completed the highest level of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards.
She said: "On behalf of the town council and the parish of Dawlish, we send our heartfelt condolences to Her Majesty the Queen and members of the royal family, at this sad time.
"I had the pleasure of meeting His Royal Highness in 1990 when receiving the Duke of Edinburgh's Gold award at St James's Palace in London. The Duke's support and encouragement of young people through the creation of the awards scheme has been an inspiration to so many.
"Due to the Covid 19 pandemic it has not been possible to open local books of condolence, but I would encourage anyone wishing to make a tribute to complete the online version, details of which can be found on the town council's website."
Messages of condolence, some of which will be passed on to the royal family, can be submitted via the British Monarchy website.
The town council is inviting people who want to lay floral tributes to place them at the foot of the Monteroy Pine tree in the middle of the turning circle at the Manor House offices.
The council said: " Those doing so should place their flowers with as little plastic as possible, and leave promptly so as to prevent gatherings from forming."
