The national flag of Ukraine was raised in Dawlish today (Thursday 24 August) to mark the country's Independence Day.

The occasion saw the hoisting of the flag, prayers and a song sung by Ukrainian refugees present.

The day was recognised for the first time in Dawlish last year.

Mayor of Dawlish Rosie Dawson said: "Today we celebrate Ukraine's independence.

"We celebrate strength, courage and friendship. We also celebrate a shared hope for lasting peace and a bright future for Ukraine."

Ukraine declared independence in 1991 amid the fall of the Soviet Union.

Russia invaded the country 18 months ago on 24 February 2022, and the conflict is still ongoing.
