Merchant Navy Day was marked in Dawlish on Sunday (3 September).

It coincided with the Armed Forces Bikers' annual Bike and Trike fundraising event on the Lawn, which provided an opportunity for a short service and raising of the Red Ensign flag.

The commemoration was attended by Mayor of Dawlish Rosie Dawson, town councillors, members and the chairman of the Dawlish branch of the Royal British Legion and Rev Fiona Wimsett representing Churches Together in Dawlish and District.

The Merchant Navy Red Ensign flag was hoisted by Barry Cockram of the Merchant Navy to a general salute bugle call by Alison Sweet of Torbay Brass Band.

Merchant Navy Day was established on 3 September 2000, the anniversary of the beginning of the Second World War.
