Firefighters rescued a woman and her two dogs after they became trapped in mud at about 10am this morning (Wednesday 3 November) in a field near Chercombe Bridge near Newton Abbot.

As many as 20 cows had surrounded her in the field, and were around just five feet away.

Using a salvage sheet and wading poles, fire crews managed to free her just 25 minutes after her initial call.

A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said in a statement: "One fire appliance from Newton Abbot, the Specialist Rescue Team from Exmouth and an Environmental Protection Unit and support pump from North Tawton attended an area of land near Chercombe Bridge this morning after a female and two dogs became trapped in mud.

"The female called fire control after becoming trapped in mud up to her knees whilst walking her dogs. The field also contained some 20 cows who had surrounded her and were only about five feet away. Fire control remained on the phone to the female to keep her calm and to help guide firefighters to her location.

"25 minutes after her initial call, the female had been freed from the mud. Fire crews used a salvage sheet and wading poles."
