The Dawlish HM Coastguard Rescue Team was called out just after 6pm yesterday (Thursday 14 July) to Teignmouth seafront after reports of children 'tombstoning'.

Tombstoning is jumping into water upright from a height.

The coastguard team found a large group of children near Teignmouth Lighthouse, and warned them of the risks, including the fact that there is a concrete shelf at the bottom of the wall in that location. Some of the children continued to jump despite the advice.

A spokesperson said: "Dawlish Coastguard Rescue Team were tasked at 1807hrs on 14th July 2022 to the seafront near to Teignmouth Lighthouse to reports of children tombstoning.

"A large group of children were present. They were all spoken to regarding the risks posed. Although the tide was in there is a concrete shelf at the bottom of the wall. Some took the advice, others continued jumping.

"Solent Coastguard were updated and content that the team had done what it could with the advice passed and the team were stood down to return to station."

If you get into difficulty at the coast, you can dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
