The army of volunteers helping at Dawlish's Covid vaccination centre are to be officially thanked by the town council.

The mayor Alison Foden praised their work in her report to the full council on Wednesday, February 3, and councillors unanimously supported a proposal by Cllr Linda Petherick to send the volunteers an official letter of gratitude.

The council's events, projects and tourism officer Angie Weatherhead told the meeting the team comprised members of Helping Dawlish, town council volunteers, carnival volunteers, Friends of Dawlish Hospital and many individuals who had come forward to help.

The Rotary Club and scout leaders had also offered to volunteer if necessary.

The helpers are acting as marshals in the car park of Dawlish Community Hospital, directing patients to suitable parking spaces and keeping the traffic flowing.

Angie said on that day alone, 600 vaccinations had taken place, and the team had helped to ensure that everything ran smoothly.

She added that the volunteers are 'in awe' of the NHS staff who are carrying out the vaccination programme for Dawlish.

It is being run by the Channel View Medical Practice, Teign Estuary Medical Group and the Dawlish Medical Group, known as the Barton Surgery.

The mayor told Angie that she and her team were doing 'amazing' work, and Cllr Martin Wrigley said: "It's a joy to see how the town comes together to help anyone who needs it."
