Consultation launched over plans to close Dawlish railway station ticket office
Great Western Railway has launched a consultation asking the public what they think of closing ticket office windows - including at Dawlish railway station.
It comes as part of plans to close hundreds of ticket offices in England over the next three years as more fares are paid digitally.
Some would remain, but at smaller stations ticket office staff would take on "multi-skilled" roles and be available to sell tickets on station platforms instead.
At Dawlish railway station, 34.4 per cent of tickets were sold at the ticket office window, 25 per cent at the ticket vending machine, and 40.6 per cent booked online in the 2022/23 financial year.
The average of tickets sold at ticket offices is less than 15 per cent, GWR said.
A GWR spokesperson said: "Subject to consultation, ticket office staff would transition to multi-skilled roles.
"This would allow staff to help more customers with a wider range of issues, including helping them to buy tickets, wherever they are on the station.
"This will, however, mean changes to how our station teams are organised, and some ticket offices will close as the new roles are introduced.
"GWR is consulting with the public on an individual station-by-station basis."
