Illegal cold callers have been trying to sell over-priced household items in the Dawlish area, according to police.

On Friday, October 23, Teignmouth and Dawlish Neighbourhood Police said they received five calls in three hours reporting young men knocking on doors and offering cleaning products for sale.

The callers claimed to be young offenders who had just been released from prison, and said they needed to raise a certain amount of money every day to be signed off by their probation officer.

Another story they told was that they were taking part in a scheme designed to help them earn enough money to make a living.

Warn elderly neighbours about the bogus callers

A police spokesman said: "This is not true. This is a scam. They want you to feel sorry for them.

"They sell their products for way over the normal asking price, for example, gardening gloves £10, long reach duster £15, bleach pen £7.

"They will target quiet areas where there isn't a lot of foot traffic, and mainly elderly residents.

"Please if you do have an elderly relative or friend make them aware and ask them not to open the door.

"They are typically young males carrying a large black rucksack filled with everyday products.

"They are selling goods illegally as they do not have the correct pedlar's certificate."

Police advice on avoiding these callers

The police are advising local residents to keeping their front doors shut, preferably with a chain fastening.

They are asking people not to buy from the callers, to deter them from returning.

If the callers are unpleasant or threatening, report them to the police by calling 101 or 999, depending on the level of threat.

Police are also offering 'No Cold Callers' stickers which can be placed near the door to deter unwelcome visitors. Anyone who would like one is asked to contact the police with their name and address.
