First Glimpse: A look inside Dawlish's new Thai and Mediterranean restaurant 'Sticky Rice'

Dawlish's new restaurant 'Sticky Rice' has just opened its doors, having taken over the premises from the Ugly Duckling restaurant which closed in September.

Husband and wife Inan Sarican, from Turkey, and Janya Neil, from Thailand, have plenty of experience under their belts from running the Sultan restaurant on Sidwell Street in Exeter for three years and a Thai restaurant in London for 11.

When they visited Dawlish, they decided to try something different and offer a mix of Thai and Mediterranean dishes.

Initially, they're going to focus on their Thai food and lunch and dinner service.

Inan said: "We want to do Mediterranean as well, but not at the moment. We will do Mediterranean maybe six or seven months of the year, in the spring and summer time."

Janya said: "I come from Thailand, I love cooking, and Thai food is very healthy, and fresh; it's what I can do for the customer. I love cooking!

"We're going to find somewhere to live here [in Dawlish], it's easier for us.

"I love the weather, I love the summer here, I love the people here."

Plenty of options

Sticky Rice has a range of curries, soups, and noodles, and the owners were keen to particularly highlight their set menus and seafood. They also have vegetarian, gluten-free, and dairy-free options. Janya said: "If they want spicy food, we can add more chilli on any dish. We can do without chilli, on some dishes. All of my curry, I make it mild, and if they want more we can add it.  "Some people think Thai food is all spicy ... [but] a lot of Thai dishes have no chilli at all." You can find Sticky Rice on the Strand opposite the Co-op, and here on Google Maps. The restaurant is open from 10am-11pm seven days a week, and its telephone number is 01626 437343.
